Graphic recording (also known as sketchnotes) can be leveraged by all industries. From education institutions to nonprofits, all types of organizations can benefit from visual communication. In this post, we are going to share more about how a specific industry is utilizing graphic recording – healthcare. Check out some examples below from our clients!
ACC’s Industry Advisory Forum
In this particular example, the American College of Cardiology used our visual summaries for their Industry Advisory Forum and their magazine. From membership statistics to governance, graphic recording was used to draw out the discussion at the meeting. We love their focus on learning, education and being inclusive.
AMCP Partnership Forum
One of the powers of visual communication is the ability to re-purpose and reuse. I had the pleasure of creating a visual summary real-time during their meeting. By re-purposing the digital image in their newsletter, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy was able to share their information to a broader audience. They covered industry updates and took time to examine “ways to best utilize and integrate medical and pharmacy data to improve health outcomes and lower costs.”
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
The NHLBI gathered a group of organizations, whose mission is to conquer sickle cell disease. They shared stories of their experience with the disease and came together to collaborate on a new effort called “Cure Sickle Cell Initiative”. Through our graphic recording, the group discovered their intended audiences, high priority messages and covered who to partner with to spread the word even more. They wrapped up the session sharing their emotions and optimism about the day. NHLBI then re-purposed the images in a letter from the Director posted on their website. What a wonderful way to show the ideas and voices of the participants!
These are just a few examples of how healthcare professionals are using graphic recording. This innovative visual practice can be used in your organization. Contact us today to learn more, click here!

Location, location, location. When it comes to your next event, location is everything. You want the right atmosphere for your audience to encourage participation and get guests excited to attend your event. If you are in the Washington, DC area like us, there are some great spots to check out and book for your conference or annual meeting. Our graphic recording projects have taken us to each of these, and here are a few of our favorite locations below!
The Watergate Hotel
With stunning views of the city and large sized rooms perfect for conference events, the Watergate Hotel has it all. Our favorite place, the Moretti Grand Ballroom has 27,000 square feet ready to accommodate your needs. This space has a lot of natural light, which we love. You can’t beat that river view! This hotel would be an excellent option for an all-day event, and you could end the night with a gorgeous view of the sunset to top it all off.
Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
The possibilities are honestly endless with this space. You can make your event into a one of a kind experience with all of the available locations in this building. From more massive galas and fundraisers to smaller board-style meetings, there are few different ways to host an event here. Our personal favorite, the Atrium has amazing ceilings and architecture that can serve as an excellent backdrop for your conference panel or gala gathering.
The Hamilton
One of the more lively locations on our list, The Hamilton has so many fun places to enhance your event program. The Hamilton Live stage is a great platform and has ample seating for many people to attend. This location also has a lot of technology options and sound and lighting packages as well.
Dock5
The end our list we saved one of the best for last. Dock5 is a unique warehouse space that is indeed a blank canvas you can create as your own. From smaller scale events to more massive guest lists or audiences, this space can really transform into whatever you want it to be. With such a flexible floor plan, event producers can get creative. Wifi is also included in the event space, great for tech companies or social sharing opportunities for your event.

You’ve planned the event, prepped the speaker and got the seats filled with participants! So exciting. Now for the fun part. In this previous blog post we shared all about what prepping for an event with See in Colors services looks like, and in this post we are going to tell you all about our day-of duties.
We make sure to arrive early to set up, stocked with our markers and paper, supplies that we take care of. We know what tools of the trade work best to make your content pop off of the page. We set everything up in a spot that works best for your preference and the room layout. We end up in a spot where we are able to create, but also listen in to what is being shared. Our role is to listen closely and synthesize the information. We sketchnote the essence of the conversation, drawing out major quotes, tidbits, key takeaways and more.
Think of our team as your “visual thinking partners.” We keep in mind the audience that is at your event and how they will retain the information that is being shared. If you are anything like us, and the science backs this theory up, most of us are visual learners. While lectures and keynotes are amazingly helpful and insightful to industry teachings, trends, etc. – visuals are the way to go when sharing information. We make sure to tap into this learning style when we design and doodle our materials.
We draw a visual that represents your event well and shares major themes that you audience is looking for. Items like key phrases, major pull quotes, fresh ideas and more. We include other marketing items into our creations like your event hashtag or your company’s brand colors and logo. We wrap up everything on-site, filling in any last minute details or phrases that may have been missed once the event has completed. It all comes together in a one of a kind presentation, perfect for social media sharing as well as a fun item to display in the office. While we may take a few photos ourselves of the finished product, the physical chart is yours to keep.
Told you this was the fun part! We love working with companies and businesses to bring a fun and fresh new element to their event program. Want to learn more? Visit our services page here!

Panels are a great way to engage an audience through multiple perspectives on current events, industry trends and more. The perfect addition to any conference or event, panels can help peak interests of lots of audiences depending on the variety of speakers you have featured. Another great way to increase the excitement around your event’s panel is through graphic recording. Check out our three tricks for making a panel be the highlight of your next event!
Create Visual Summaries – Hire a graphic recorder to summarize your panel through visual notetaking. No more “death by powerpoint” or scribbly meeting notes, bring something fresh to the experience. These visual summaries can include the main points, fun details and encouraging words from the panel. Bonus Tip: Let your graphic recorder know if want to include panelists names and social media accounts so participants can continue to follow along long after the event is completed.
Encourage Photos – Encourage your panelists to take photos with attendees in front of the visual summary. This could serve as a fun backdrop! Have them stand by their favorite quote from the panel or devote a section of the visual summary to each panelist for them to pose by.
Get Social with Sound Bites – Pulling quotes and strong snippets from the panel can be great for social media sharing. Tell participants to take photos and post on their platforms with a specific event hashtag. Tag panelists as well to promote your event and content reach with their followers as well. When your company is sharing on social, be sure to include details about ways to stay in the loop to encourage sign-ups for future gatherings. Once people see what is shared through these visual summaries, it will undoubtedly pique interest for the next event!

Thinking of the next big business move? Or dreaming up a big idea? Get creative and think outside of the box with a new way of brainstorming using pictures! This form of visual thinking can help you expand your thought process and get more out of your brainstorm sessions.
Below are our top four tips for visual thinking!
Incorporate more color. Sticking with black and white can be a little dull and on the boring side. Bring some color into the mix. You can color code ideas to represent goals, topics and more. Don’t forget to add some neon post-it notes to the mix. This is where your creativity can come out!
Connect similar thoughts. Draw an icon in the center to represent the topic. Draw lines to branch out from the central image. Now group fresh ideas and thoughts inside thought bubbles or clouds to keep things organized. Need some help with your drawing skills? Take our FREE icon course for more tips! Another way to keep ideas grouped is through highlighting similar topics. Allow your color coding to come into play again through this organizational tip.
Go big. Big paper means BIG ideas. Don’t limit your space with small pieces of paper. Grab some poster board or large pieces of butcher paper. If your company has a print shop, ask them for some plotter paper which tends to be 30” inches or so wide. You can draw and write large ideas and have smaller topics or action items branch off of your big idea. Bring a few pieces to make sure you don’t run out of room and can keep the ideas flowing!
Encourage participation. Get the office or team involved with this process. You can expand your original ideas or let them bring new thoughts to the table. One way to encourage participation is to bring colored dots to your session. Allow each participant to use their dots to identify which idea they like the most and contribute their vote! The dots could also serve as a representation of their roles in the company as shown in the image below. See where everyone adds their talents!
